In 1977, Star Wars was released, The plot of this movie refers about the war between two forces, the Galactic Empire and the Alliance, the first ones, have in their possession a space station called the Death Star which is capable of destroying an entire planet, in order to stop the Galactic Empire, the Alliance brings back those who form part of the Jedi Order, which posses special habilities, being the most noticeable the use of the "Force". In this sense, there is something that most of the time confuses people and even fans, and that's the fact that this movie it's called Episode IV - A New Hope, even though it's the first movie in this saga, in the present article we will talk about the possible reason behind this.
When the film was released, its director Jorge Lucas was not sure about producing a sequel to this movie, because of that the original 1977 movie was called solely Stars Wars, when time passed and the idea of a second movie was more realistic, the subtitle Episode IV - A New Hope was added, in this sense, some people claim that Lucas was not happy about the fact that his new film will have a Episode number on it's name arguing that it will only confuse people but this was never confirm. The second and most accepted theory behind is that Lucas got the idea of producing some prequels to this movie when he was finishing the scrip from the second movie (Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back), and this was to some extend confirm by Lucas himself, about this, he spoke to a journalist and told him that he just have an inmense amount of material and stories that have place before the first movie (Episode IV) so because of that he then decided that the subtitle Episode IV - A New Hope was needed.
Continuing with this idea, boths statements are so some extend, true and false, the reason is that the subtitle of the first movie was added in 1981 when the first film was re-released, and not in 1980 which was the time the second movie (Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back) was released.
In this sense, fans and people that follow this saga have not reached an agreement in reference to the subtitle myth, and the real reason this movie was given such subtitle, some people close to Lucas declare that the reason is that he wanted to make a tittle similar to those in the Flash Gordon installments (A movie that Lucas wanted to made but was never give the rights to do so).
Lastly, The mystery behind the title - subtitle of the Star Wars first movie is still something that intrigue some people, the "real" reason behind it remain unknown and looks like it will remain that way at least for quite some time, there is something that can be said for sure, and that's the fact that Lucas it's an intriguing man, and, without a doubt, likes to stand out for the rest, maybe that's the reason behind this particular and original way of calling a film.
