About the Avengers

Looking for an unbeatable team of amazing superheroes? Check out the Avengers wallpapers. The Avengers is a team of superheroes that pop up in comic books, TV shows and movies, originally published by Marvel Comics. The team first appeared in September 1963. The comics were written by the one and only, Stan Lee, and illustrated by Jack Kirby. Although not Lee’s original superhero team, The Avengers basically replaced the All-Winners Squad. Though the roster has been changed throughout the years, the original roster included Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, the Wasp and Ant-Man with Captain America joining them early on after they found him frozen in a block of ice. The Avengers are called “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” and while the roster changed their mission did not: to fight “the foes no single superhero can withstand.”

Back in the 1960s, it was Thor’s brother, Loki, that first assembled the team together to stop the Hulk, who Loki was using as a pawn. Once Loki was stopped, Ant-Man made the suggestion that the team forms up and the Wasp ended up naming the group the Avengers. Early on, Ant-Man swapped names to Giant-Man and the Hulk left with Captain America taking his place. Not too long after, everyone but Captain America resigned from the Avengers, leaving the team open to being filled up by Black Widow, Black Knight, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Hercules. Eventually the constantly rotating roster would become a trademark for the series with few heroes taking up the spotlight for too long.

Over the years there would be several variations of the Avengers to form, such as Avengers Forever, where most of the world’s heroes are killed by Martians and an older Black Panther leads a team that features Killraven, Living Lightning, Jocasta, Thundra and Crimson Dynamo. While one of the more interesting versions is Marvel Zombies where, you guessed it, a team of zombie Avengers set out to eat humanity. While the Avengers has always stayed pretty relevant in the mainstream, there was a huge revival in the Marvel cinematic universe when the first film came out in 2012.
