Some cool facts about Rick and Morty

Take a second and really give Rick and Morty a good look over - who do they remind you of? If you haven’t guessed, then think back to one of the most beloved movie franchises of the 1980s. That’s right, Rick and Morty originated as a parody of Back to the Future. The show is an Adult Swim animated sci-fi show. It was thought up by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, and originally started as a parody film that was called the Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti, which was shown at the Channel 101 short film festival. After the first showing, the two creators decided they wanted to expand the program.

As a parody, you’ll obviously recognize that there are some pretty jarring differences in characters between Rick and Morty and Back to the Future. First off, Rick Sanchez is actually a raging alcoholic who also happens to be a crazy mad scientist. The entire show follows Rick as he moves into his daughter’s home and tries to fit into the lives of her children. He typically splits his time between awkward family moments and developing crazy science projects that are both dangerous and transdimensional. Morty is Rick’s grandson who is good-hearted but irresponsible.

Rick may be the maverick character in the show, but it’s Morty that really helps keep things grounded. He basically acts as the moral compass for Rick, whose ego can sometimes lead the duo into some pretty murky waters. Morty’s sister, Summer, is another frequent character who has joined the duo adventures with increasing frequency. She’s a bit more of a conventional teenager, always looking to make herself look better to her friends.

Rick and Morty are currently in its third season. If you’ve been around the internet for any given amount of time, or are a fan yourself, you probably know there was a bit of time where fans weren’t sure of when a season three would hit. The first episode dropped surprisingly on April 1, 2017, which was April Fools Day. However, the rest of the 10-episode season didn’t air until July 30, 2017.
